When working with overseas partners it is important to ensure that risks relating to governance, financial management and controls are understood, assessed and mitigated. This one-day event will provide an opportunity to share experience and expertise around the process of undertaking due diligence on overseas partners on research grants. The case studies and learning outcomes will be relevant to any research projects with overseas partners, but the event will focus on due diligence in GCRF projects specifically. (Note that the event does not cover ODA compliance).

There will be an opportunity to hear from RCUK about due diligence and assurance in general, and about new requirements in relation to overseas partners, and to hear case studies from Universities which have implemented processes to manage these requirements. There will be lots of opportunity for discussion, questions, and contributing ideas from your own experience.

The day will close with a review of due diligence requirements and different approaches to meeting these requirements, and reflection on whether delegates might implement change in their own institutions or work together to improve practice at a regional or sector level.

By the end of the event participants will:

  • Understand the concepts of due diligence and assurance
  • Understand the context of due diligence requirements for GCRF projects
  • Have reviewed the risks and the challenges that these present at different stages of the research grant process
  • Be aware of different approaches to undertaking due diligence on overseas partners, including the benefits and limitations of these approaches
  • Have reflected on how they would apply their learning within their institution
  • Have reflected on how they can work with others to improve practice.

Target audience

This one day event is aimed at research managers from university schools, faculties, research centres / institutes and central offices, who are involved with GCRF projects or due diligence. This could include those who support GCRF bids, post award and finance teams, and contracts / legal teams, including those who are responsible for undertaking due diligence and those who determine department or institution policies and procedures for due diligence and broader grants management. The event may also be of interest to those who support other kinds of projects with overseas partners.
