Arts and Humanities Research Board
The Arts and Humanities Research Board supports research within a huge subject domain from traditional humanities subjects, such as history, modern languages and English literature, to the creative and performing arts. They fund research and postgraduate study within the UK's higher education institutions and provide funding for museums, galleries and collections that are based in, or attached to, HE institutions in England. The Higher Education Act intends to establish an Arts and Humanities Research Council, which will be the next stage in the evolution of the AHRB. As with the other research councils, the AHRC will be located within the Office of Science and Technology and operate on the UK-wide basis.
Association of Medical Research Charities
AMRC is a membership organisation of the leading UK charities that fund medical and health research. It was founded in 1972 and established as a charity in 1987. Government Departments
Department for Education and Skills
Department for Education and Skills research website
Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
DEFRA is a major funder of science; spending of over £300m annually on research and other scientific activities such as surveillance and monitoring.
Department for International Development
New science, technologies and ideas are crucial for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, but global research investments are insufficient to match needs and do not focus on the priorities of the poor. Many technological and policy innovations require an international scale of research effort. DFID's Central Research Department (CRD) commissions research to help fill this gap, aiming to ensure tangible outcomes on the livelihoods of the poor. We also seek to influence the international and UK research agendas, putting poverty reduction and the needs of the poor at the forefront of global research efforts.
The Department invests in research to support government objectives for public health, health services and social care, and contributes to the government science strategy. The Department of Health spent approximately £540m in 2002-03 through the policy research programme and NHS R&D programme. The policy research programme undertakes development and evaluation in public health, health services and social care in order to ensure that policy is based on reliable evidence of needs. The NHS R&D programme aims to identify NHS needs for research and to commission research to meet those needs (£89m in 2002-03).

ACU Research Management Programme
The Research Management Programme is a new ACU initiative in one of the fastest growing areas of university administration.
