Induction Workshop

The ARMA Induction Workshop is an established annual two day residential introductory level course for 40-50 research administrators typically in their first year in post. Participants come from university and independent research centres and institutes, central administrative offices in universities, research funders and other not for profit areas such as the NHS. Research administrators who are particularly new in post find it an invaluable part of their initial training, showing how different aspects of the research management process fit together; those with a little more experience report that it is very useful in reinforcing what they have already learnt and reassuring them when they are going about things the right way.

The workshop addresses a wide range of activities undertaken by research administrators, and aims to ensure all participants have a good understanding of the fundamental areas of research management and administration. The programme covers the varying roles and responsibilities of a research administrator, information on funding agencies and the applications process, introductions to finance, contract negotiation, and managing a research project, and looks at issues involved in research governance and ethics and in working with research students. It also provides participants with a network of contacts for on-going support in their posts. Participants receive a high quality comprehensive handbook including all course materials.

The course runs in the autumn each year. The 2011 workshop will be held at Aston Conference Centre in Birmingham on 29-30th September. Potential applicants can register an expression of interest at any time by emailing events@arma.ac.uk.
