Working with uncertainty: research administration in the real world
Novotel Bristol Central, Bristol
3-4 March 2008
Target Audience
This workshop is aimed at research administrators who have gained some experience in research support and whose most recent or next career move is likely to be into a management role. Participants are likely to have a range of backgrounds, but the typical participant will have three to five years' experience, whether in a single aspect of research administration (e.g. research development; post-award) or in a general position, or in a related business area, with at least one year's experience in research administration. Many participants will be responsible for supervising other research support staff.
The indicative programme and price for the workshop are detailed below. We are now inviting expressions of interest for this workshop to ensure a mix of participants from a variety of institutions and job roles, and to help course leaders in determining members of each working group. Unlike some ARMA events, we will not be accepting bookings on a 'first come, first served' basis. Please take a few minutes to tell us a bit about yourself, your role and your background.
Please ensure before submitting your expression of interest that you will be able to attend the workshop on the dates shown. You should email your expression of interest, following the format given, to events@arma.ac.uk by 4th February 2008. We will review the expressions of interest on receipt, and inform applicants whether they have been allocated a place. Successful applicants should then make their booking in the normal way through the ARMA events booking system. No booking will be accepted unless it has been confirmed in advance through the expressions of interest approach. Allocated places not confirmed by online bookings by 15th February may be re-allocated to another participant.
Objectives
The workshop will challenge participants to think beyond their current role and consider issues in research management and administration across the whole research lifecycle. It will provide participants with an opportunity to:
- extend and consolidate their knowledge in a variety of areas of research administration;
- encounter new approaches to existing tasks and reflect on their current practice;
- consider their current role and how it might develop in the future;
- meet other members of the profession and extend their professional networks.
Approach
The course is intensive and focuses on practical issues in the management of research. Sessions include a mixture of formal presentations, discussions and a group case study. The case study will continue throughout the workshop and will allow participants to apply their previous experience and the information provided on the course. Participants will be encouraged to learn from each other as well as from course leaders; the course leaders are also keen to learn from participants. There will, therefore, be ample opportunity for informal discussions and interchanges of information. The course will not provide in-depth training in the various specialist functions considered; rather it aims to help participants understand how different areas of activity and policy relate to each other. The course team will provide clear guidance on where to find further information on the topics covered.
The course team includes
- Steff Hazlehurst, Head of Research and Consultancy Administration, Institute of Education, University of London
- John Rogers, Director of Research & Enterprise, University of Stirling
- Pauline Muya, School Manager, School of Crystallography, Birkbeck College
