Workshop for experienced research administrators
Our annual workshop for experienced administrators runs in March or April each year, and focuses on issues in the management of 'live' projects and portfolios of research, with sessions on practical issues in managing a research portfolio; securing funding for research; financial and contractual matters; issues for research-only and research-active staff; supporting research: organisation, systems and processes; and dissemination and knowledge exchange. A group case study exercise runs throughout the course.
This workshop is aimed at research administrators who have gained some experience in research support and whose most recent or next career move is likely to be into a management role. Participants are likely to have a range of backgrounds, but the typical participant will have three to five years' experience, whether in a single aspect of research administration (e.g. research development; post-award) or in a general position, or in a related business area, with at least one year's experience in research administration. Many participants will be responsible for supervising other research support staff.
In order to ensure a mix of participants from a variety of institutions and job roles, and to help course leaders in determining members of each working group, participation in this workshop requires the submission of an expression of interest form prior to bookings being accepted.
The course runs in March or April each year, and the 2009 workshop dates will be announced in late 2008. The course will be advertised here and on the open email list in the winter; alternatively, potential applicants can register an expression of interest at any time by emailing events@arma.ac.uk.
The most recent programme is available for reference; details are subject to change from year to year, but it offers an indication of the material covered.
