ARMA Training
ARMA provides a structured programme of training courses, including our annual Induction Workshop aimed at new research administrators, and a series of Training Seminars covering around ten key topics in some depth. We hope to able to offer accreditation for these courses in the future. New residential workshops for more experienced administrators and managers ran in 2006 for the first time.
The Induction Workshop is an annual two-day residential introductory level course for research administrators from a wide range of backgrounds, typically in their first year in post. It addresses a wide range of activities undertaken by research administrators, and aims to ensure all participants have a good understanding of the fundamental areas of research management and administration, both to ensure the highest quality of research administration in the future and provide the basis for further career development for individuals. Fundamentals of Research Administration is a one-day condensed version of the Induction Workshop, which normally runs twice a year.
We are developing a series of about ten training seminars, whose topics build on those covered in the induction workshop. Seminars have recently been delivered on costing and pricing, VAT and intellectual property rights and courses on research and consultancy contracts and research ethics are currently being developed, in collaboration with other leading providers in the field. Future topics include sources of funding for research, European research, project management, disseminating research findings and managing research students.
We are continuing to seek ways to extend our training provision to encompass the full breadth and depth of the profession. Our residential workshop for experienced research managers, focusing on issues related to research strategy development and implementation, runs in January most years; a workshop for administrators with 3-5 years' experience, drawing out the links between specialist areas within research administration runs in March each year.
