RAE 2008
The primary purpose of the RAE 2008 was to produce quality profiles for each submission of research activity made by UK institutions. The four higher education funding bodies (HEFCE, SFC, HEFCW and DEL) used the results to determine their grant for research to the institution which they funded in 2009-10. Higher education institutions (HEI) in the UK, eligible to receive research funding from one of these bodies, participated in this exercise.
The 2008 assessment took place during 2008, looking at research work by subject over the 2001 – 2007 period. The results are available on the official RAE website
In previous RAEs (1986, 1989, 1992, 1996, 2001) results were given as a single grade. In 2008 the results were in the form of a graded profile (see http://www.rae.ac.uk/aboutus/quality.asp for more details), making comparisons with previous RAEs difficult.
