News and events
ARMA encourages professional development amongst research managers and administrators, by providing a series of training and information events. These events offer opportunities for the exchange of information, knowledge, expertise and best practice between members, and keep members up to date with developments in the field.
Our two-day Annual Conference takes place in June each year and in 2009 attracted more than 300 people, including a broad range of high-profile speakers. Sessions include plenary presentations from expert speakers who address issues of topical strategic and policy relevance, smaller parallel sessions focusing on a particular area of interest, and a variety of small group workshops and discussion groups focusing on practical issues and their implementation. The 2010 Conference will be held in Manchester on 8/9th June, with pre-conference events offered on Monday 7th.
Expert seminars are usually one day events focusing on a single topical subject. They are led by expert speakers, often from funding bodies or similar agencies, who talk about a policy area relevant to their roles.
We offer a structured programme of training courses, including a series of one or two-day Training Seminars covering around ten key topics in some depth and our residential workshop programme, with two-day workshops offered at three levels. Each September, we run an Induction Workshop aimed at new research administrators; in March we have a workshop for administrators with typically around 3-5 years' experience; and in January we offer a workshop for experienced research managers.
We have been working with the Research Councils and other funders to provide a series of short Study Tours to funding bodies, offering members an opportunity to find out more about the way these funders work. We also support a number of focused Special Interest Groups for members, which conduct debate, circulate information and share best practice via email and produce reports from time to time, which are made available to the wider membership.
Other events may be organised during the year, including seminars offered jointly with some of our partner organisations. All events are notified to members via the quarterly members' newsletter, where possible, and on the open email list.
Our sister organisations in Europe, North America, Australasia and Southern Africa have their annual conferences at various times of the year. We update details of their forthcoming conferences as we know them.
