Research Management and the REF Consultation

The seminar will cover two main themes:

  • setting the scene from a HEFCE point of view and discussing the management options open to institutions, given the current uncertainties, and
  • a more detailed discussion will take place on how the REF requirments are shaping up, including what the main changes are, interaction with HESA and possible systems implications

This will allow thorough debate of the management issues in the current context, which can be taken back to home institutions for input to the consultation and to begin to make preparations for the actual return itself.  

A follow-up workshop is planned after the HEFCE consultation is complete and guidance on submission more definitive, placing the REF within a broader research information environment.

Target Audience

This seminar is aimed at those involved in the submission of the REF and focuses on the 'mechanics' of  making the return.

This will provide an overview of the structure of the REF, highlighting differences to RAE 2008, and the approach HEFCE is adopting to finalise its design and management.  5 mins Q & A

This session will focus on the approach being adopted on data requirements specifically and potential implications for process and system developments in HEFCE and HESA. The most up-to-date information on how HEFCE and HESA are planing to interact on collection will be presented. 5 mins Q & A

Delegates will be invited to post questions on boards while having lunch, to inform the later panel session.  Key themes will be identified to group questions on post-it notes.

Managing the uncertainties in the REF- Simon Kerridge, Jill Golightly, Tony Weir 

Panellists will give a short retrospective on the pros and cons of their approaches to managing the RAE2008 in the context of consultations and uncertainty, highlight specific issues of concern in the REF and arrive at a view on 'Is there an ideal place to aim for right now?' 5 mins Q & A
