Good Advice for Hard Times!

7/8th June 2011, Radisson Blu Hotel, Glasgow

This year's conference theme was improving our skills and supporting our researchers through the hard times ahead. This year we mixed our popular opportunities to meet funders, discuss policy developments and the funding landscape with a wide range of practical sessions themed around improving our skills and the quality of our interactions with colleagues.  Examples included negotiation and pricing techniques, transferable skills for research managers, working effectively with colleagues from public engagement, contributing to researcher training, how to foster collaborations and encourage interdisciplinary research, and many more.

With more than thirty sessions/workshops to choose from, the range of topics was designed to appeal to research managers and administrators of all levels of experience - whether involved in strategic issues or working in specific areas.  In addition to a thought-provoking programme, the ARMA conference offered members a chance to network and build career-enhancing relationships, as well as the opportunity to meet professional providers of services to the research community in the exhibition area.

The Conference Programme included a choice of six parallel sessions, spread over two full days and structured in themes.  We were delighted to welcome our plenary speakers:

  • Professor Anton Muscatelli, Principal and Vice Chancellor of University of Glasgow
  • Ehsan Masood, Editor, Research Fortnight
  • Ewart Wooldridge, CBE, Chief Executive of the Leadership Foundation 
  • Dr Ian Carter, Chair of ARMA

For the first time, the ARMA Annual Conference was run back-to-back with the PraxisUnico conference, in recognition of the increasing convergence of research support and knowledge transfer functions. Both conferences were held at same venue, thus offering delegates the opportunity of attending the PU conference afterwards and maximising the value of their travel and time away from the office.

 

Venue:

The 2011 Conference was held at the Radisson Blu Hotel in central Glasgow, a city brimming with culture and fun, second only to London for shopping.  The venue was ideally located -  close to the M8, diagonally opposite Central Station and only a short ride from Glasgow International Airport. 

The striking Radisson Blu Hotel has won numerous architectural awards, including being chosen as Glasgow Hotel of the Year. The dedicated conferencing/event area is conveniently situated on the first floor. ARMA delegates could take advantage of the discounted room-rates negotiated at the conference venue

Poster Exhibition

At this year's conference we once again hosted a members' poster exhibition and the best poster was awarded a prize.  Congratulations go to the Bournemouth University team of Corrina Dickson, Anita Somner and Julie Northam for their winning poster 'Tailoring the Pre-award Process' - well done!

Volunteers required!

Would you like to help with the smooth running of the conference? Whether it is your first time, or you're a regular attendee, volunteering is a great way to help the organisers and to meet other members.  

A wide range of opportunities open to volunteers, including working on the registration desk or in the conference office and/or acting as a room monitor. Room monitors are responsible for liaising with their session speaker/s and for making sure attendees are in the right session.  The role includes timing the session so it doesn't overrun and sorting out room problems.

Volunteers are always able to attend all their pre-booked parallel workshops but must agree in advance of the conference which session(s) they will monitor. We rely on monitors to attend the session(s) to which they commit.  News on how to volunteer for the 2012 conference will be published on this website - so keep your eyes peeled!
