Tony has been a research administrator and manager ever since completing his PhD (on squirrels) nearly 10 years ago. His current role involves managing the team that provides specialist professional advice, expertise and support systems to the University community on all contractual and research funding matters. He is also Clerk to the University's Research Coordination Board and is involved in the development of research strategy and major proposals (such as SRDGs, SRIF, research pooling activities, research student and staff training programmes, etc). At Heriot-Watt he established a forum for all those involved in research administration across the university to meet to discuss current issues.

He started his career as Research Development Officer in an institute of Royal Holloway University of London. After a period managing research and related funding activities out in the public and voluntary sectors (at the Natural History Museum and the Scottish Wildlife Trust) he returned to HEIs in 2002. Previous to his current post he worked at the University of Edinburgh on a project taking the latest research as a basis for developing CPD programmes for school teachers.

He still retains a strong interest in promoting research to a wider audience as Events Secretary of the Edinburgh and South East Scotland Branch of the BA; and has run events from 'Shopping for Stem Cells' to 'Science & Society at the Movies'.

Tony joined the ARMA Executive Committee in summer 2005.
