Who are ARMA's members?

Our members work in universities, in funding bodies, in the NHS, in independent research centres and in other public and voluntary sector bodies in the research sector. The university sector is the largest, with 64% of members in pre-1992 universities and 28% in post-1992 universities. We have 9 individual members working in the NHS and 28 in research funding bodies. Other individual members work for policy makers, local government, and organisations supporting public sector research. One of our current strategic priorities is to increase the number of members in the NHS and research funding bodies, including government departments.

Within their organisations, our members work in central offices supporting and managing research across the organisation, as well as in research centres and departments alongside researchers. About two thirds of our members work in central offices, and around a third in research centres, departments and university faculties.

Those members who work in central offices often cover a range of research disciplines (except those in specialist institutions), whereas those working alongside researchers are more likely to specialise in a particular area. 474 members can be identified as working in a particular discipline; of those 31% are in social sciences, 33% in life and medical sciences, 14% in engineering, physical and computing sciences, 17% in arts and humanities, and 3% in natural and environmental sciences.

Looking at their job titles, 329 of our members may be classified as 'administrators' and 258 as 'managers'; however 671 have the word 'research' in their job title.

74% of our members are female.
